How to Choose a Panchakarma Doctor in Indore
Eight questions I would ask if I were choosing a Panchakarma centre for my own family, from a physician practising in Vijay Nagar, Indore.
Indore has many places offering Panchakarma today, from hospitals and clinics to spas and wellness centres. For a patient, it is not always easy to tell the difference. Over the years, I have seen patients come to us after treatments that were not right for them, done without proper assessment.
So here are the questions I would ask if I were choosing a Panchakarma centre for my own family.
1. Is the treatment planned by a qualified Ayurvedic doctor?
Panchakarma is a medical treatment, not a massage package. It should be planned by a registered Ayurvedic physician with a B.A.M.S. or higher qualification. You can ask for the doctor’s registration number; a genuine practitioner will not mind.
Therapists carry out many procedures, but the plan, the medicines and the supervision should come from the doctor.
2. Will you be examined before treatment starts?
A good first visit is a consultation, not a treatment session. The doctor should take your history, examine you, look at your reports and ask about the medicines you take.
Be careful if a centre offers you a fixed package before anyone has examined you.
3. Will the doctor tell you if Panchakarma is not suitable?
Not every patient needs Panchakarma, and some conditions need a medical or surgical opinion first. At our centre, the first question on day 1 is whether Panchakarma can treat the case at all.
A doctor who sometimes says “this is not for you” is usually a doctor you can trust when they say “this will help.”
4. Is the plan made for you, or is it the same for everyone?
Two patients with the same diagnosis often need different plans. The combination of therapies, the number of sittings and the medicines should depend on your examination, not on a standard menu.
5. Are the procedures done hygienically?
For procedures such as leech therapy, Agnikarma or Basti, hygiene matters a great deal. Ask simple questions: Are leeches used once and never reused? Are instruments sterilised? Are medicated oils prepared properly and not shared between patients?
6. Will you understand the cost before you start?
You should know the full cost of your plan, including medicines, before treatment begins. Clear pricing is a sign of a centre that is comfortable being transparent.
7. Will the doctor work alongside your other treatment?
If you are already taking medicines for blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid or any other condition, a responsible Ayurvedic doctor will not ask you to stop them. The plan should work alongside your existing care.
8. Is Panchakarma the same everywhere, and does it give the same results at every centre?
No. Although the basic principles of Panchakarma remain the same, the treatment approach, procedures and outcomes may differ from one centre to another.
Panchakarma is not just an oil massage or a fixed set of therapies. It is a personalised Ayurvedic treatment planned according to the patient’s Prakriti (body constitution), Vikriti (health condition), age, digestive strength, disease severity and overall health.
The experience and clinical judgment of the Ayurvedic doctor, quality of medicines and oils, correct selection of procedures, proper preparation, treatment duration, dietary guidance and post-treatment care all play important roles.
Even when two centres perform the same Panchakarma procedure, the treatment experience and results may differ.
At Ayurveda Gokulam Panchakarma Kendra, we focus on individualised treatment planning and performing therapies under professional supervision.
Remember: The name of the therapy may be the same, but the treatment approach and results are not necessarily the same for everyone.
