Leech Therapy in Indore — Jalaukavacharana
One of the gentlest of the classical Raktamokshana methods, performed with non-toxic medicinal leeches and clinical care — for stubborn skin and vascular concerns.
Classical heritage · Sushruta Samhita
Raktamokshana — therapeutic bloodletting — is described in the Sushruta Samhita, the classical Ayurvedic surgical text. Jalaukavacharana, the leech method, is named there as the mildest and most suitable form for sensitive patients. What we practise today follows that lineage.
Recognised system of medicine · AYUSH
This therapy is practised within India's AYUSH system of medicine, by Dr. Chaitanya Gupta, B.A.M.S. — registered with the M.P. Ayurveda Board (Reg. No. 56576) — using non-toxic medicinal leeches prepared and handled as the classical texts prescribe. Each leech is used once and never reused.
What is Raktamokshana leech therapy?
Raktamokshana is the Ayurvedic practice of removing a small, controlled quantity of blood to relieve conditions linked to vitiated Rakta (blood) and Pitta. Jalaukavacharana is the version that uses the medicinal leech (jalauka).
The leech attaches to the affected area and draws a small amount of blood. Its saliva contains natural compounds traditionally valued for supporting local circulation and easing inflammation. The process is slow, largely painless, and closely supervised.
Who it is for
Leech therapy is traditionally chosen for localised skin and blood-related complaints that have not settled with routine care.
- Recurring or inflamed skin conditions where Rakta and Pitta are involved
- Non-healing patches, localised swelling, and certain chronic skin lesions
- Heaviness and discomfort associated with varicose and spider veins
- Patients who prefer a classical, minimally invasive Ayurvedic approach
The Ayurvedic approach
A considered, step-by-step process
Every session is preceded by an individual assessment. The physician decides whether Raktamokshana suits your constitution and condition before anything begins.
- 1
Consultation & Prakriti assessment
The physician reviews your history, examines the site, and confirms whether leech therapy is appropriate. Not everyone is a candidate, and we say so honestly.
- 2
Preparation (Purva Karma)
The area is gently cleaned. Medicinal leeches, kept in controlled conditions, are readied. No numbing chemicals are used, as the leech's own saliva makes attachment comfortable.
- 3
Application (Pradhana Karma)
One or more leeches are applied to the marked area. They draw blood slowly over a set period while the physician monitors you throughout.
- 4
Detachment & dressing (Paschat Karma)
The leeches detach naturally once satiated. The site is cleaned, dressed, and simple aftercare advice is given for the following days.
Traditionally used for
Conditions this therapy is used to support
In the classical texts and in clinical Ayurvedic practice, Jalaukavacharana is traditionally used to support:
- Chronic and recurrent skin conditions
- Localised varicose and spider veins
- Non-healing wounds and stubborn patches
- Inflammatory Pitta-Rakta presentations
- Certain forms of hair-line and scalp concerns
- Localised pain with an inflammatory component
Leech therapy is traditionally used to support these conditions — it is not a guaranteed cure. Results vary from person to person, and the therapy is offered as part of an individualised plan, not as a standalone promise.
What to expect
Your visit, step by step
- A single session usually takes 30–60 minutes, depending on the number of leeches and the site.
- Most people feel only a mild pinch at attachment; the process itself is largely painless.
- Minor oozing from the site for a few hours afterwards is normal and settles on its own.
- Your physician will advise how many sessions may be reasonable to review progress.
