Abhyanga, Pottali Massage & Restorative Therapies in Indore

The nourishing, sensory side of Ayurveda — warm-oil Abhyanga, herbal Pottali massage, Karna Puran ear care and Akshitarpan eye care — restorative therapies that soothe body and senses.

  • Restorative & soothing
  • Nourishing oil therapies
  • Part of our wellness programmes

Not all of Ayurveda is intensive. Alongside the deeper Panchakarma procedures sit the restorative, sensory therapies — warm medicated oils, herbal poultices and gentle care for the ears and eyes — that nourish the body, calm the nervous system and leave you genuinely rested.

These therapies are soothing in their own right and also form the backbone of our wellness programmes. Each can be enjoyed on its own or woven into a plan by Dr. Chaitanya Gupta, and they pair especially well with care for sleep, stress and mood.

Abhyanga (warm-oil massage)

Abhyanga is the classical full-body massage with warm medicated oil, worked along the tissues and channels in flowing strokes. It is deeply grounding — easing muscular tension and dryness, improving circulation, and calming an over-active Vata and a restless mind.

As a restorative therapy it is valued both for how it feels and for what it supports: better sleep, softer skin, less stiffness, and a real sense of unwinding. It is often the opening therapy in a rejuvenation plan and a natural companion to Shirodhara for stress and sleep.

Pottali (Potli) massage

Pottali massage uses warm herbal boluses — cloth pouches filled with medicinal herbs, and sometimes warmed rice or medicated powders — pressed and dabbed over the body. The combination of gentle heat, herbs and rhythmic pressure eases stiffness, soothes aching muscles and joints, and relaxes deeply.

It is especially comforting for tension, fatigue and Vata-type stiffness, and is frequently combined with Abhyanga within a restorative session. As with all our therapies, the choice of herbs and the emphasis are matched to you.

Karna Puran (ear care)

Karna Puran is the gentle instillation of warm medicated oil into the ears — a classical restorative therapy for the ears and the head region. Traditionally it is used to soothe the ears, support comfort in conditions of dryness and to add to a sense of overall calm.

It is a mild, relaxing procedure, often included within a restorative or Panchakarma session rather than sought on its own. Where an ear problem needs medical attention, Dr. Chaitanya Gupta will say so honestly rather than treat it as a wellness therapy alone.

Akshitarpan (Netra Tarpana — eye care)

Akshitarpan, also called Netra Tarpana, bathes the eyes in warm medicated ghee held within a small dough ring around each eye. It is the classical Ayurvedic restorative therapy for the eyes — traditionally used to soothe tired, dry and strained eyes, a welcome relief in an age of constant screens.

It is a calming, nourishing procedure carried out carefully by the physician. It is offered as supportive eye care and relaxation, not as a replacement for an eye specialist where a condition needs proper ophthalmic assessment — and we will tell you when that is the case.

Honest expectations

What this care can — and cannot — do

  • These are restorative, supportive therapies — deeply soothing and nourishing, and offered as such rather than as a cure for any specific disease.
  • They can be enjoyed on their own or built into a wellness plan or Panchakarma programme by the physician.
  • Where a symptom needs medical or specialist assessment — an ear or eye problem, for instance — Dr. Chaitanya Gupta will say so plainly rather than treat it as wellness care alone.
  • They pair particularly well with care for sleep, stress and mood.

Questions, answered honestly

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Abhyanga, and how is it different from an ordinary oil massage?
Abhyanga is the classical Ayurvedic full-body massage with warm medicated oils, worked along the body's tissues and channels. Unlike a purely relaxing rub, the oils and technique are chosen for their therapeutic effect — grounding Vata, easing dryness and stiffness, and calming the mind — while still being wonderfully relaxing.
Are these restorative therapies part of your wellness packages?
Yes. Abhyanga, Pottali massage and the other restorative therapies feature within our 7-Day and 14-Day wellness programmes, and they can also be booked individually. Which therapies suit you, and in what combination, is planned at consultation.
Can Akshitarpan or Karna Puran replace seeing an eye or ENT specialist?
No. Akshitarpan (eye care) and Karna Puran (ear care) are soothing, restorative therapies offered as supportive care and relaxation. Where an eye or ear condition needs proper medical or specialist assessment, we will tell you honestly and encourage you to see the right specialist rather than rely on a wellness therapy alone.
